DEPUTY SPEAKER TAYEBWA URGES PUBLIC ACCOUNTS COMMITTEES TO UPHOLD ACCOUNTABILITY

#BfmNewsUpdates:
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has called on Members of Parliament serving on the Public Accounts Committees (PACs) to execute their oversight role with integrity, professionalism, and impartiality as they begin scrutinising the use of public resources.

Speaking while opening the induction programme for the committees at Imperial Golf View Hotel in Entebbe on Thursday morning, Tayebwa said the Public Accounts Committees play a vital constitutional role in ensuring that every taxpayer's shilling is used efficiently, transparently, and for the benefit of Ugandans.

He noted that through objective examination of the Auditor General's reports and constructive engagement with Accounting Officers, the committees have an opportunity to strengthen public financial management and improve service delivery across the country.

Tayebwa reminded the legislators that over the next five years, the credibility of Parliament's oversight function will largely depend on how effectively they carry out their responsibilities, stressing that they represent both Parliament and the people of Uganda.

The Deputy Speaker also pledged that Parliament's leadership would remain accountable, saying the institution cannot demand accountability from others while failing to uphold the same standards itself.

He urged the committee members to execute their mandate without fear or favour, noting that effective oversight is essential to supporting government's tenfold economic growth strategy.
