News desk 28/4/2026
As Kikuube District prepares for a closely watched Local Council V by-election, the Electoral Commission has urged residents to put peace above politics.
Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has called on voters, candidates, and political actors to avoid violence and conduct themselves responsibly during the campaign period and on polling day.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement at Kikuube District Headquarters on Monday, Byabakama stressed that the credibility of the election will depend on the behaviour of all participants.
Kikuube will go to the polls on June 10, 2026, to elect a new District LCV Chairperson following the death of Peter Banura, who perished in a road accident on April 4, 2026, along the Hoima–Fort Portal Road.
Banura, who had recently been re-elected with 37,455 votes against his closest rival, Phenekansi Timanyire of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who polled 6,230 votes, was the son of Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Major General Matayo Kyaligonza.

According to the Electoral Commission, Kikuube District has over 150,000 registered voters spread across 330 polling stations in 335 villages within seven sub-counties.
