UGANDA NOMINATES OLARA OTUNNU FOR UN SECRETARY-GENERAL

The Government of Uganda has nominated Ambassador Olara Otunnu for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government described Otunnu as an accomplished diplomat with over four decades of experience in international diplomacy, public service and peacebuilding.

Otunnu has served as Uganda's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, President of the UN Security Council, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and UN Under-Secretary-General. He also became the first Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict.

The government says his broad experience within the UN, government and academia makes him well qualified to lead the global body.

The term of the current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, ends on 31 December 2026, and Uganda has appealed to UN Member States to support Otunnu's candidature.
