KIU Graduates 1,044 Students at 33rd Graduation Ceremony

Bushenyi, Uganda – June 14, 2026A total of 1,044 students graduated from Kampala International University (KIU) during the institution's 33rd Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the university's Western Campus in Bushenyi District.The ceremony was held under the theme: "Fostering Sustainable Innovations and Future-Ready Graduates Through Competence-Based Education."The graduates received qualifications at various levels, including Certificates, Diplomas, Bachelor's Degrees, Master's Degrees, and PhDs.Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Al-Hajj Hassan Basajjabalaba, called upon the government to reconsider its decision to abolish facilitation for medical interns. He described the move as misguided and warned that it could negatively affect professionalism and the quality of healthcare services in the country.Basajjabalaba also expressed gratitude to parents, guardians, and sponsors for the sacrifices and support they provided throughout the students' academic journeys, which culminated in their graduation.The University Chancellor, Prof. Yunus Dauda Mgaya, appealed to the government to review policies governing medical training, particularly the requirement for universities to retain medical students for six years despite the existence of a five-year medical curriculum.He noted that KIU remains committed to producing graduates equipped with practical skills, real-world problem-solving abilities, innovation, entrepreneurship, and employability competencies needed in today's dynamic job market.Representing the Vice President as Chief Guest, Second Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Crispus Kiyonga urged the university management to identify and address critical skills gaps within Uganda's economy.Dr. Kiyonga highlighted shortages in key professional fields, including biomedical engineering, anesthesiology, cybersecurity, and digital forensics, among others. He encouraged the university to prioritize training in these areas, noting that doing so would significantly contribute to national development and position the institution for greater success.The graduation ceremony marked another milestone in KIU's mission to produce competent, innovative, and future-ready graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to society and the global workforce.#BfmNewsUpdates
